When Diunna Greenleaf's Blue Mercy won the 2005 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, the guitar player was Jonn Del Toro Richardson, and he left town with the Albert King Award for the competition's most promising guitarist. A year earlier he had played guitar behind Pinetop Perkins at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas, on a bill with Robert Lockwood Jr., Honeyboy Edwards and Henry Townsend, for a live album that took the 2008 Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album. His own debut, Tengo Blues, which he produced with Anson Funderburgh for VizzTone in 2015, won the 2017 Blues Music Award for Best Emerging Artist Album. He spent years making other people sound like legends. He learned exactly how they did it.
