GamperDrums FunkJazz

Chris Gamper cut his 2009 album Standard Funk at Red Rooster Studios in Berkeley with Garth Webber, who played guitar in Miles Davis's band in 1986, running the board, and Stephen Hart, the engineer behind John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom and David Bowie's Black Tie White Noise, mixing and mastering it. The record does what its title promises: Herbie Hancock's Chameleon, Coltrane's Giant Steps, Monk's Bemsha Swing and Chick Corea's Windows, all run through a funk lens, with Sam Bevan and Aaron Germain on bass, Michael Abraham on guitar and Joe Cohen on saxophone. FunkJazz is that idea built for a room. Gamper is a Canopus endorser with a bandleader's habit, which is why the kit is the front line here and not the back row.

Gamper records and performs as GamperDrums and released two albums under his own name in 2009, Time Capture and Standard Funk. He built his name in the Bay Area session world, on other people's records and other people's stages. FunkJazz is the night he takes the lead, turning jazz standards inside out over a backbeat, with the drum kit set where the singer usually stands.
