Before Etta James was famous she was keeping company with a young Clarence Sims, and before the Fillmore had a marquee worth arguing about he was opening for B.B. King and Dinah Washington at the original Fillmore Theater. He took the name off a street sign while racking balls at Trees Pool Hall and has been Fillmore Slim ever since. Troyce Key of Eli's Mile High Club paid for the first album in 1987, Rick Estrin worked five nights a week in his band as a teenager, and Kid Andersen produced the most recent record at Greaseland. West Coast Blues Hall of Fame, class of 2008. He is in his nineties, he still headlines, and he will be the sharpest dressed man in the room.

His first 45 was a jump blues called You Got the Nerve of a Brass Monkey, cut for the Los Angeles label Dooto in the late 1950s. The records kept coming, from Other Side of the Road on Fedora through the Mountain Top trilogy to Son of the Seven Sisters in 2019. Memphis handed him the Lowell Fulson Jus' Blues Award in 2011.
