In 2010 Paul Steward and his father Richard became the first California Native artists to win a blues award at the Native American Music Awards, and Steward has carried that band, Twice As Good, across two decades of North Bay stages ever since. A Southeastern Pomo tribal member of the Elem Indian Colony, he cut his 2022 solo debut World Champion for 2XG Records, nine songs that run from Jimmy Dawkins to Bay Area soul man Freddie Hughes and include “Myanik Xe (Beautiful Music),” the first commercially released song ever sung in the Southeastern Pomo language. Tonight he leaves the band at home. One guitar, one voice, one set, and a hundred seats in the room.

Steward was raised on the Sulphur Bank Rancheria and came up in Santa Rosa, where he and his father Richard built Twice As Good into a working blues band over two decades of North Bay rooms.
