Gunhild Carling

The Count Basie Orchestra billed Gunhild Carling as its special guest at Stanford's Bing Concert Hall, and Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox made her a viral phenomenon when she played ten instruments on one cover of Pharrell's Happy. The Swedish powerhouse handles trombone, trumpet, harp and bagpipes, often three trumpets at once, and she learned it inside a jazz dynasty led by her father, the Swedish trumpet legend Hans Carling. Carling has performed at Stockholm's Royal Palace for King Carl XVI Gustaf's Ruby Jubilee, placed third on Sweden's Let's Dance, and taken the Anita O'Day Award. Now based in Northern California, she played the 68th Monterey Jazz Festival in 2025. Our room is small. Move early.

Scotty Barnhart of the Count Basie Orchestra plays trumpet on Carling's 2024 album Jazz Is My Lifestyle, recorded at East West Studios in Los Angeles, Frank Sinatra's old room. Raised in the Carling family band (father Hans on trumpet, mother Aina on banjo), she has since played Birdland in New York and Fritzel's in New Orleans, and she took the Louis Armstrong Scholarship at age ten. This San Francisco date will not sit around.
